Bat watching in Austin
Went out to the Congress Ave. bridge to see the famed Mexican Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) take flight at dusk. It was quite a spectacular site.
First there were just a few, and then a torrent of bats flying out from under the bridge! The photo here doesn't do it justice. Here are some more pictures, that also show the human watchers (on land and water).
Learn more about this bat at the Encyclopedia of Life and read more at the Biodiversity Heritage Library.

Sharing Data for Biodiversity: Presentation at the Internet Archive
Sharing Data for Biodiversity: The Biodiversity Heritage Library. Martin R. Kalfatovic. Leaders' Forum: The Internet Archive. 21 October 2010. San Francisco, CA.
Presentation given at the "Leaders' Forum" sponsored by the Internet Archive (held at the Richmond branch of SFPL). Also, held at the same time, was the "Books in Browsers" meeting, also sponsored by the Internet Archive (held at the still new Internet Archive HQ).
I was able to slip between both. Though quite different, both had a lot of great information.

QotD: Anything that's the something of something isn't the anything of anything
Anything that's the something of something isn't the anything of anything - Lisa SimpsonNice little quote from the always quotable Lisa Simpson. The MoneyBART. Season 22, Episode 3. Available via Hulu.
The opening scene is particularly interesting, but then anything with a unicorn is interesting.

QotD: When reality is labeled unthinkable, it creates a kind of sickness in an industry.
Great quote from Clay Shirky (on the newspaper industry) from 2008.03.17

Complete quote is:
When reality is labeled unthinkable, it creates a kind of sickness in an industry. Leadership becomes faith-based, while employees who have the temerity to suggest that what seems to be happening is in fact happening are herded into Innovation Departments, where they can be ignored en masse. This shunting aside of the realists in favor of the fabulists has different effects on different industries at different times. One of the effects on the newspapers is that many of their most passionate defenders are unable, even now, to plan for a world in which the industry they knew is visibly going away (Shirky Blog) [emphasis added]
