It was twenty years ago today that the Smithsonian joined the Internet!
From the NMNH IT Times
Some early items from my Smithsonian Internet career:

The Smithsonian Institution was connected to the Internet twenty years ago this past July, when former-NMNH employee George Van Dyke and Julie Cochran made the final connection of the Smithsonian network to the rapidly growing Internet network and traffic began flowing! This was the culmination of a series of Smithsonian meetings held in 1990 and 1991 and the hard work of two Internet implementation teams: Technical and Policy.
The Technical Team was composed of David Bridge, of the Museum Support Center, and John Moreci, George Van Dyke, Bill Price and Julie Cochran, of the Office of Information Resource Management, or OIRM, as OCIO was known at the time. Barbara Smith, Director of Libraries, lead the Policy Team. Julie and George made the final connection on July 2, 1992, and the Smithsonian was on the Internet! The Internet connection was operated in test mode for a few months, before Moreci issued the official announcement on Sept. 28, 1992, a copy of which is available from SI Archives. Initial Internet services available on the Smithsonian’s network (SINet) included: FTP, TELNET and SMTP (email). The Smithsonian's first website was released May 8, 1995.First home page (from SI Archive) and the email announcement

So, we're kicking off the latest and, I'm pretty sure, the greatest of the BHL combined staff and technical meeting in Cambridge, Mass., hosted by the staff at the Museum of Comparative Zoology.
