Still time to take advantage of National Waffle Day (August 24)

August 24, 2012 is
National Waffle Day
It’s National Waffle Day! On this day in 1869, a man named Cornelius Swartwout received the first U.S. patent for a waffle. Waffles are a delightful breakfast food and can be paired with almost any topping. Butter and maple syrup, fruit and whipped cream, a big scoop of ice cream, or even a helping of fried chicken—the choice is yours!
Did you know that the first waffles originated in Ancient Greece? It’s true! The Greeks would cook flat cakes called “obelios” between two metal pans held over a fire. Today, all you need is a waffle iron and a yummy recipe for waffle batter.
To celebrate National Waffle Day, cook up some homemade waffles and have breakfast-for-dinner tonight! Enjoy!
In honor of today's waffly-ness, here are some photos of waffles I have had:

2011/06 Belgium Beer, a set on Flickr.
I had the opportunity to try a number of different Belgian beers on this trip.

One of my favorite things is that nearly all the beers have their own special glasses so that you can easily tell what everyone is drinking.

I don't think I had any overlaps this trip. My favorites were the Orval, but the Kriek was also quite interesting.

A visit to the Royal Museum for Central Africa

2011.06.08-IMG_3336While in Tervuren for the BHL-Europe project meeting, I had a chance to visit the Royal Museum for Central Africa. There was an interesting temporary exhibition, "Fetish Modernity" that had a lot of interesting content but content that was overwhelmed by the presentation.

The permanent collection was overwhelming in its own way. An amazing collection of artifacts from, obviously, Central Africa. The taxidermy display was interesting, but like many around the world, some were looking a little worn.

The Congo River exhibition was quite well done and integrated artifacts and experience (as well as a learning experience) in one coherent display.

Well, actually today is Wednesday, but I did arrive on Tuesday. Starting off my BHL-Europe meetings with an overview of the Royal Museum for Central Africa.

Yes, I know, I just got back from San Francisco, but time to spin the globe again ... this time it's clockwise ... where will it land?
