Weinberger interviews, San Francisco edition

While in Amsterdam for the DPLA meetings, (Amsterdam versions here) San Francisco for the LOD-LAM meetings, David Weinberger has been recording podcasts with various participants, sorta "librarians and informaticians on the street" talks. Jon Voss opens day two of the LOD-LAM summit

Jon opened with yet another great and inspiring talk. Told us we're all samurai and need to build the band. Also related a Ken Kesey anecdote about how you only have two bags in life, the PROBLEMS bag and the SOLUTIONS bag and you shouldn't go looking for solutions in your problems bag.

Finding which side is bar side at Pizza Orgasmica with regex

It must have been a really really long and geeky day at the LOD-LAM Summit because when I saw this sign on the door of the Pizza Orgasmica (where we were having our post-meeting dinner, the only things I thought of were:

• isn't that going to be a pain to parse?
• how annoying to write the regex to find which side when you have "bar-side" and "bar side"
• I wish all data were better normalized

and so to bed ...

The LOD-LAM summit is just a few more days away, I'm looking forward to some foggy, cooler weather, since it's been in the 90s here in Washington.

The meeting should be quite interesting. It will be run in the style of an unconference. The list of attendees is a pretty much world-wide list of great people. There are lots of people that I know (including those from my own personal Wayback machine, yes, you Richard Urban), but even more that I follow on Twitter or elsewere on the InterToobz that I'm excited to meet for the first time in person (I'm calling out Adrian Stevenson, Mia Ridge, Mathias Schindler, Perian Sully, just to pick four at random). Also there will be a good representative group from the recent Global Interoperability and Linked Data Workshop in Amsterdam (see my reports here and here), including:

I’m honored to be part of the organising committee for the International Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives, and Museums Summit that will take place this June 2-3, 2011 in San Francisco, California, USA. There’s still time to apply until February 28th, and funding is available to help cover travel costs.

The International Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives, and Museums Summit (“LOD-LAM”) will convene leaders in their respective areas of expertise from the humanities and sciences to catalyze practical, actionable approaches to publishing Linked Open Data, specifically:

Identify the tools and techniques for publishing and working with Linked Open Data.
Draft precedents and policy for licensing and copyright considerations regarding the publishing of library, archive, and museum metadata. Publish definitions and promote use cases that will give LAM staff the tools they need to advocate for Linked Open Data in their institutions. For more information see http://lod-lam.net/summit/about/.
