QotD: "The enormous size of the locks can only be understood by walking their length" - GA Miller #GlobalPlants

Miraflores Locks: The picture doesn't show the immense scale of the lock
"The enormous size of the locks can only be understood by walking their length through the underground tunnels and passageways in which  is located the marvelous machinery of their operation. To stand on the floor of a dry lock and look up at a lock gate eighty feet high, seven feet thick and sixty-five feet wide is an impressive experience, but to see a pair of such gates swing open and shut at the touch of the finger is something to be remembered." - Prowling about Panama by George A. Miller (New York, 1919)

I'm attending the 7th Annual Global Plants in Panama this year. On the night of 23 September, for our group dinner, we were treated to an evening at the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal. Quite spectacular to dine while giant ships passed through the locks.
